The Trofeo Laigueglia, in its 53rd edition, is a men road cycling race held annually in February in Laigueglia, a small town in the Savona Province.
The first Trofeo Laigueglia took place in 1964 and it soon became one of the most important cycling events in the international calendar. In fact, important pages in the history of cycling have been written on Laigueglia's roads with prestigious names such as Marino Vigna, Franco Bitossi, Michele Dancelli, Eddy Merckx, Roger De Vlaemink, Joseph Saronni, Johan Museeuw, Michele Bartoli, Paolo Savoldelli up to the more recent history with the accomplishments of Filippo Pozzato, Moreno Moser and David Cimolai, winner at the finish line of the previous race.
The route, very bumpy and hilly although no long climbs or relevant slope, focuses on the climbing of Mount Ginestro. Participants will cycle through Alassio, Albenga and Ceriale, then they will leave the coast to go inland: Cisano sul Neva, Arnasco, Vendone, Onzo, Ortovero, Villanova d'Albenga, Garlenda, Testico, Stellanello, Andora. The final sprint will take place on the coast, cycling through Capo Mele.
The Trofeo Laigueglia is an official UCI Europe Tour, class 1.HC
This year's race will be held on Valentine's Day, February 14, 2016.
Laigueglia, along with Alassio, form La Baia del Sole (the Sun's Bay), overlooking a natural bay which always attracts a huge variety of fish every summer, including about 2000 whales and other cetaceans.
Laigueglia is one of the "Most beautiful villages in Italy”: its picturesque old town of Roman origins has kept the typical intertwining Ligurian narrow alleys.
